KMJ Design Series: Brutalism

Brutalist Design Series

Second of an eight part series exploring the inspiration and process behind Kirsten’s signature design forms and collections.

The Brutalist Design series embodies nature’s organic structures with the raw aesthetic of Brutalism. Channeling the spirit of Carlo Scarpa in partnership with Pietro Porcinai, and Jack Vicajee Bertoli, the jewelry explores compositional and material purity, evoking shapes and textures inspired by sculptural gardens, exposed foundational elements, and timeless monolithic forms.

Brutalist Mosaic Pattern | KMJ

Much like mid-century Brutalist architecture, which juxtaposes structural mass with intimate details, KMJ’s pieces embrace scale and intricacy. Kirsten carves and layers each piece to reveal the inherent character of the materials. Golden bronze acquires a verdigris patina, and the colorful contrast of inset gemstones enlivens geometric patterns. The jewelry reinterprets elements from Brutalist landscapes to create handmade relics that evoke natural and constructed environments.

Brutalist Chalcedony Ring | Kirsten Muenster Jewelry

From substantial, textured rings to bold, sculptural cuffs, this collection celebrates the distinctive beauty of organic architecture. Designed for form and function, each piece flows with the body’s contours, providing a tactile appreciation of sculpted shapes. With thoughtful contrasts between hard and soft, light and shadow, every angle reveals Kirsten’s dedication to craftsmanship and love of materials.

Feast Cuff Bracelet

Burnished hummingbird beak shapes capture movement, invoking the abstracted bird’s heads within the framework of Brutalist geometry–leading the eye down into the verdant green tones of the patina, like a building being engulfed by nature.

Rectangular Lapis Brutalist Ring

This one-of-a-kind statement ring was carved to mirror Brutalism's strength and raw beauty. Like a reflecting pool in a sculpture garden, the bold, geometric design cradles a stunning piece of lapis that draws contemplative engagement. The vibrant blue hues against a robust bronze structure feel ancient and contemporary.

Mosaic Ring

This sculptural ring feels lush and alive, like an overgrown, weathered gate or ancient mosaic. The hand-carved band has a unique texture, like rippling water. As the patina evolves, the color adaptation mirrors the timeless resilience of Brutalist structures.
